Pleasant surprise in the form of horse racing profits

I'm a big advocate of a portfolio approach to trading and I was delightful that my losses in the football trades I picked were offset with profits on both Horse Racing and Darts.

I only had a handful of runners yesterday which were grouped as 6 x EW Doubles, 4 x EW Trebles and an Accumulator. As they were in short fields with a risk of late withdrawals, I played the bet via Betfair multiples to guarantee 3 places rather than with the bookies who'll only pay 2 if the can. I like Betfair multiples for the comfort of 3 places but their interface of open multiples is awful!

The day started badly when my banker Bay Central got carried away at the start and threw his jockey in his haste to clear the first. From the 30 seconds he was in the race he looked like a good horse. Things got a little better when Shot In the Dark faded to finish 4th, bad for my multiples but good as my place lay insurance bet retrieved my stake and a little extra. A place and win for my final 2 put me £7.97 up on a bet which would have lost without insurance.

My profit for the day came from my Place singles which returned £36 net profit from 4 selection backed and layed in running. The 2 winning trades in 15:50 at Southwell particularly satisfying.

I love it when a plan comes together! Or something like that.
